Our Craft

Every piece that leaves YAES Atelier is the product of hands — not a production line. Our garments are cut, assembled, and finished by craftspeople who have spent decades perfecting a single discipline: the slow, deliberate construction of denim and ready-to-wear that is built to outlive the season it was made in.

We work exclusively with small-scale factories in Portugal and Italy — workshops where the same person who cuts a pair of jeans will often finish the waistband and press the final seam. These are not anonymous facilities; they are family-run ateliers where craft is inherited, taught, and refined across generations. Each factory we partner with is vetted not only for technical ability but for the way it treats the people inside it: fair wages, safe conditions, and the time required to do the work properly.

Construction is where our obsession becomes visible. A single pair of jeans passes through more than forty pairs of hands before it is packed. Seams are chain-stitched on vintage Union Special machines for that signature roping fade at the hem. Rivets are set individually. Waistbands are cross-stitched to resist twisting. Pockets are bartacked at stress points so they hold shape after years of daily wear. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is automated beyond the parts that genuinely benefit from it.

The result is clothing with a kind of honesty that machine-only production cannot replicate. Slight variations in stitch tension, in the way the fabric breaks, in the texture of a hand-finished hem — these are not flaws. They are the signature of a human hand, proof that what you are wearing was made by someone who cared how it turned out.

We produce in deliberately small runs. A style is not restocked indefinitely; when a roll of fabric is finished, the piece is finished. This keeps our factories focused, our quality consistent, and our customers wearing something that not everyone else owns. It is the slow way, and the only way we know how to do this.
